OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
The local Wissahickon Valley, which is part of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, is a National Natural Landmark and one of just a few remaining urban wilderness areas in the United States. The Wissahickon Valley comprises about 1,800 acres with 75 miles of trails, and is one of the most popular sections of Fairmount Park. One of the great pleasures of living in the area is the opportunity to enjoy the Valley and the beautiful Wissahickon Creek. Enjoy the changing seasons while hiking, running, cycling, rock-climbing or horseback riding. Cross country skiing during the winter and trout fishing in the spring are other options.
The Morris Arboretum is a well-tended and beautiful outdoor site, and harbors a collection of fine specimen plants. Educational programs are offered, as well as children's programs and special festivals, such as the Cherry Blossom Festival in April.
The community offers family-oriented outdoor festivals, as well as concerts in the local Pastorius Park, during the warmer months of the year. The Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club is a good resource for a variety of children's sports programs.
SHOPPING
AND DINING
Enjoy shopping in a wide variety of unique specialty stores. Local merchants take pride in their old-fashioned service and fine quality merchandise. Kilian Hardware and Robertson’s Florists are just a few. The Weavers’ Way Co-op in W. Mount Airy is an excellent place to shop for virtually all your household needs. Especially good is the array of local, organic produce and artisanal cheeses, much of it coming from Amish farmers in Lancaster County
From simple to extravagant, dining is taken seriously here. Take advantage of the array of delightful restaurants along the avenue which offer a number of ethnic cuisines. Bakeries, espresso and sushi bars, and ice-cream shops are some of our favorite stops along Germantown Avenue.
